In 1984, a group of parents had a vision of a place where their mentally ill adult
children could find meaning in the midst of their persistent mental illness. They
created a home-like environment in southwest Houston that encourages
interaction, involvement, and growth--a place where adults dealing with the
difficulties of mental illness can gather for friendship and social activities as well as
for rehabilitation and training opportunities. They named this The Gathering Place.
At The Gathering Place, many members learn new ways of coping with their illness,
often discovering hidden aspirations and talents that give their lives fresh meaning
and inspiration. It is truly a place for making a new start. No other resource exactly
like this exists in the immediate community or in the entire state of Texas.
The Gathering Place started with six volunteers and eight members. Now with
seven full time staff members, 11 board members and a budget of over $650,000,
we serve approximately 60 members daily and maintain an annual membership of
more than 540. In 2007, The Gathering Place was recognized both on the state and
national level for the quality of its programs and services
